May Gardening Tasks
Planting Month, Soil Warmth, and the True Start of the Growing Season
May is one of the busiest and most exciting gardening months in Kamloops. With longer days and warming soil, it’s time to plant, prepare, and enjoy the garden’s return to life.
Finish Hardening Off Seedlings
Continue gradually exposing indoor‑grown seedlings to outdoor conditions. Kamloops’ spring winds can be harsh, so start in a sheltered spot and increase exposure daily.
Plant Cool‑Season Crops (All Month)
Cool‑season vegetables continue to thrive in May. Keep sowing:
- Lettuce
- Spinach
- Radishes
- Carrots
- Beets
- Peas
- Kale
Successive plantings ensure a steady harvest.
Prepare for Warm‑Season Planting
Kamloops nights can remain cool into late May. Warm‑season crops—such as tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, and beans—should be planted only when nighttime temperatures stay above 10°C.
Most gardeners plant these late May to early June.
Plant Potatoes
May is an ideal time to plant seed potatoes in well‑amended soil. They appreciate the warming ground and longer days.
Mulch Garden Beds
Apply 3–4 inches of organic mulch (wood chips, bark, or shredded leaves) to:
- Suppress weeds
- Retain moisture
- Moderate soil temperature
Mulching early in the season pays off all summer long.
Fertilize Perennials, Trees, and Shrubs (If Needed)
If plants show signs of nutrient deficiency or slow growth, apply a balanced fertilizer. Healthy, established plants may not need additional feeding.
Divide and Transplant Perennials
Early May is still suitable for dividing many perennials, especially those that bloom later in the season.
Plant Annual Flowers
Once frost risk has passed, fill containers and beds with annuals for colour. In Kamloops, this is typically mid‑ to late May.
Monitor Soil Moisture
Kamloops’ dry climate means soil can warm and dry quickly. Check moisture levels regularly, especially in raised beds and containers.
Watch for Pests and Diseases
Aphids, flea beetles, and early fungal issues can appear this month. Inspect plants often and address problems promptly.
