Keep Your Poinsettias Blooming
The three biggest mistakes that ruin poinsettias are: exposing them to cold drafts, overwatering, and keeping them in low light. Avoiding these will keep your plant vibrant all season long.
- Improper Watering
- Overwatering is the most common problem → leads to root rot and yellowing leaves.
- Underwatering causes wilting and leaf drop.
- Let soil dry completely between waterings; water just until moist, not soggy.
- Misting helps hydrate leaves without affecting soil moisture—especially useful in dry winter homes.
- Wrong Light Conditions
- Poinsettias need bright, indirect light.
- Direct sunlight shortens bloom life.
- Move plants away from sunny windows during peak brightness.
- Temperature Extremes
- Ideal temperature: 70–75°F.
- Cold drafts or overly cool rooms signal “winter” to the plant → early bloom loss.
- Heat sources (fireplaces, vents, lamps) dry leaves and soil too quickly → stress and shortened bloom time.
Post-Bloom Care
When bracts fade, prune the plant back to about 4 inches, place it in a sunny window, and allow it to regrow. New leaves appear in a few weeks.
